Let Me Bring You Up To Speed .... (Part Two)

(Moving an old webpage to a blogpost ...

A lot started to happen in my life medically that was potentially changing my future as an artist, then along came

     'Cut Through All The Crazy'

This was the first painting I managed to complete while recovering from a brain bleed caused during a procedure in June 2024. Leaving the hospital with limited communication skills and no motivation, I wasn't sure if I'd still be able to paint, or even if I'd want to! But that's when I truly learned how incredible the NHS services are in Kent. Within days, I was assessed and provided with speech and occupational therapy. It was with the encouragement of the lovely Megan that I proved to myself I still had it in me—and that there was so much more to come.

My painting hasn't been as relentless as before, but it's become more meaningful and thoughtful. When I've been physically unable to paint, I've taken a couple of online courses, and I can honestly say they've been invaluable. One guided meditation moved me to tears, while listening to a fellow artist open up about her own life touched me deeply. These moments have shaped my perspective and my work in ways I never expected.

Now, eight months on, I have a meeting booked with neurosurgeons to discuss further treatment, followed by a neuropsychological assessment. It'll be interesting to see how last June's events have influenced my ability to make a decision about brain surgery. I know it's the only real solution—I can't go on like this, and it's not fair on my husband either.

Speaking of which, another big change has been to our home life. After 27 years, we've finally put our house on the market and are looking for somewhere new—somewhere we can both thrive creatively. My dream is to find a peaceful place with room to paint at home, and for Giles to have space for a recording studio. Until then, I've had to stack all my paintings at the end of the garage, squeezed in alongside my easels and art supplies. There's just enough room to get in and use the tumble dryer!

I've been trying to stay connected with the art community online as much as possible, though I've had to turn down opportunities for the time being. The uncertainty around my health and what's next makes it hard to commit.

That said, one thing I'm incredibly proud of is making it to the Art Fair at Chelsea Town Hall in February. With Giles' help, I got there with all my paintings, set up my stand, and engaged with everyone who stopped by C14. I may not have sold my big painting, but I did sell a small one, along with plenty of cards and prints. More importantly, I felt comfortable and confident talking to people, which, given everything, is a huge win in itself.
